It happens every year. The young ones go back to school, and come home with sniffly noses, and scratchy throats. The melting pots that are our schools are great for education, and building immune systems, but not so great for sending them home to spread the lurgies around.
On average primary school children get six to eight colds a year, according to John Hopkins Medicine. For high school kids, it’s about half that. Many commonly refer to this as the “back-to-school plague.” Whilst the kids can typically bounce back pretty quickly, as we get older, we tend to find some of these bugs harder to shake. It’s true that we build up immunity to some of the 200 odd different viruses through our lifetime and are certainly more prevalent if we are tired or, don’t eat particularly well.
So, what can we do to keep those lurgies at bay?
Try to ensure that you eat healthier. Introduction of dark green-leaf vegetables and cruciferous vege are full of antioxidants and help to keep the body healthy. Reduction of refined sugar can have a positive effect on our health overall.
Get enough rest. If you are looking after the grandkids after school or playcentre, ensuring that you get a good night’s sleep is vital to maintaining a healthy body.
Wash your hands often. It’s a good exercise to get into, and to teach the young ones. Using a natural, good for your skin hand wash will ensure that you are getting rid of the bugs but looking after your skin.
Supplement. Not all supplements are created equal, and there are quite a few mixed messages out there. The best way is to keep it simple.
